Even Zico scored more than Lionel Messi, says Brazil

Brazilian club Flamengo may challenge Lionel Messi’s calendar year record, saying that former Brazil captain Arthur Antunes Coimbra, nicknamed  ‘Zico’ scored 89 goals in 1979.

Barcelona’s Messi scored his 87th and 88th goals of the year in Wednesday’s King’s Cup last-16 first leg at Cordoba having thought he had broken Gerd Mueller’s 1972 record of 85 on Sunday.

“We are upset.  Messi still hasn’t passed the milestone,” Bruno Lucena, head of Flamengo’s research and statistics department, told Brazilian sports daily Lance.

Lucena calculated that Zico scored 81 goals for Flamengo in 1979, plus another seven for Brazil and one in a friendly between Argentina and a Rest of the World XI.

He added that Zico missed two months of the season through injury between September and November.

“If he had played for the whole year, he would have scored more than 100 goals,” he said.

Lance produced a list of goals scored by Zico in 1979. According to the statistics, he hit six goals in a game on two occasions, four goals in a game once and five hat-tricks.

The Zambia Football Association on Wednesday said it will present evidence to show FIFA that Kabwe Warriors striker Godfrey Chitalu scored 107 goals in 1972, thus beating Lionel Messi’s mark for most goals scored in a calendar year, according to reports.

“We have this record, which has been recorded in Zambian football, but unfortunately it has not been recorded in world football,” a Zambia FA spokesperson told the Zambian website Soccer Laduma. “Even as the world has been looking at Lionel Messi’s record, breaking Gerd Müller’s, the debate and discussion back here has been why Godfrey’s goals are not being recognised.”

The spokesperson said the Zambia FA has commissioned an independent team to “go back into the archives and record minute-by-minute each of those goals,” to appeal to the Confederation of African Football and FIFA, according to a report published in The Guardian.

Chitalu, played for Zambia’s national team, before becoming a national coach. He died in 1993 when a plane carrying the team crashed near Gabon.

FAZis just playing on your minds! do you honestly think Kalusha would petition CAF, let alone FIFA over Chitalu’s achievement? Who is going to pay Kalu’s children’s welfare if he petitions FIFA/CAF? The guy is a boot leaker and can not do that! He can even sell Zambia just to be able to sustain his “coloured” children! Kukonda bazumgu!

We need to be serious with certain issues. This is not politics but an issue concerning our own son of the soil. We need answers to questions like: Did ulcar score all goals on FIFA sanctioned days? is it every score that is recognized? …….. DID ZAMBIA SUBMIT THESE STATS TO FIFA, WHY DID IT TAKE LONG TO DO SO?

    • Mwiya Situmbeko   December 13, 2012 at 16:33

Good questions but you must consider what rules were applicable then. I do not think we had FIFA sanctioned days back then, can someone shed more light?

Ridiculous………The wiki is showing the number of goals scored by Zico for club recognized by FIFA was 65 and for Brazil was 5 in the calendar year of 1979. All these are nonsense now. 40 years have gone but nobody looked into the matter. Why not the so called statisticians have brought the issue even when messi was on the verge of breaking Muller’s record?

  14. ashiwel   December 13, 2012 at 11:55

leave messi feels he is the best let him leave Barca and try in another league. you see he wont be able to compete. messi is only enjoying what people have done on ground.

    • XYZ   December 13, 2012 at 13:03

If you hate MESSI’s achievements this much, blindfold him and take him to the Zambian Premier League. Then watch him score 900 goals per year. Leo Messi is not responsible for the fiasco or disaster faced by those who have changed leagues. Some have changed leagues only to prove a point or two. How is Leo responsible if they haven’t done just enough to equal him; let alone surpass him? By the way, Leo has just enough skills, scintilating enough to have him perform just as well in any other top league around the world. I know you’re a fan of a top player in this world, and you would like to see him equal and surpass Leo. If you love him just as much as you hate Leo, then tell the former to do the following: exhibit humility; exercise gratitude to his team mates even for the least support they’ve given him; avoid the thought that he’s better than the rest of his team mates and therefore deserves much more; and let him concentrate on his team and his game rather than his rival(s). Maybe even you need some of these pieces of advice.

Ati Messi Messi. Just eighty chakuti goals! Me I scored 180 goals in six months when I played with Mkandawire Hot Spurs, Mgubudu Village, Chipata. Why has FAZ not recognised me? Appreciate your own first before you complain about others. The village league is tougher than the Spanish league dominated by two teams. Let Messi play in the Mgubudu and see if he will shine

If there never was a time limit, then let them bring this out. You keeping quiet only makes them behave more superior than us blacks. Let the World know that a black man holds the reigns in the book of the best goals scored in a calendar year.

FIFA doesn’t count goals scored with barefeet. If you were scoring goals barefooted then they won’t recognize your goals. Above all, goals scored inside a pitch surrounded by barbed wire.

    • luapula bize   December 13, 2012 at 10:47

Ba chimpombwa, tell us kaili the one who scored with bare-feet on a pitch surrounded by barbed wire. We’re waiting….

    • space   December 13, 2012 at 15:36

This is not the first time this issue has come up. If I recall sometime in the 1990s, the FAZ executive of that time also tried to get Chitalu’s record recognised but they were asked for the evidence. 1972 is not very far away, so the story of Chitalu’s goals is not folklore. People cannot be just be making wild claims. It must be true save for the fact that our recording keeping is not the best.

  22. Limbikani phiri   December 13, 2012 at 09:22

But all of you where where you when Muller was considered the highest scorer? No one ever argued and all of a sudden you hear that MESSI has overtaken the record and then you start barking. You mean you were so deaf about Mullers record?

You will all never be better than Messi. I also managed to score 214 goals in the Zambia division two side in early 2004 and no one has ever talked about it and yet goals are goals. Let’s all just admit it. Messi is far above all those you are dreaming about. Just concentrate on beating the record Messi has set.

One blogger yesterday mentioned that our own Chitalu used to score( 13-16 goals in one game and they would beat a team by 36-0 meaning that these were completely useless games and you called it football? Tell me who can score such a scoreline in one game in this modern age?

It’s just MESSI all the way.

  26. Mainza   December 13, 2012 at 08:28

Brazil legends will not agree on Leo Messi achievement because they don’t believe that anyone not from Brazil can be better than them. The method used to pick G.M and now L.M is what qualifies one to be the greatest scorer. Come 2014 in Brazil we will see the better team get the cup and best players and player will then be known when all things are equal.

The past (Zico, Chitalu, Mueller) is gone Leo is now ruling and tomorrow may be it will be Neymar or mine. Enjoy the sport.

  27. The ugly truth   December 13, 2012 at 08:02

People where has even one who thought to have scored goals been all this time to present you goals.Messi gets to the mark and it becomes an issue.Let the boy be he is a great player and non of you wanna be can compare.Foolish jealousy.

  28. Njooka   December 13, 2012 at 07:43

The big question is why now? No one said anything for 40 years when Muller was considered to have scored the most in a calender year. Why now?

    • Boza!!!   December 13, 2012 at 08:44

      Consdered by who, Europeans?!!!!

      • Cinelli   December 13, 2012 at 23:13

Considered by FIFA and the world…
The issue here is that both Brazil and Zambia never oficially submitted these stats, so how is FIFA supposed to guess that they did score more. And the reason why it,s coming out now is because MESSI is the one that broke the record. It’s simple, Zambia is trying to hang Chitalu’s name on Messi’s star. Because so much attention is being put on Messi and the record, it’s a way of taking some of that attention and transfering it to others.

  29. judge 1000   December 13, 2012 at 07:36

as an influential striker i scored the most goals in 1983 in Mansa breaking a record of 188 goals in 7 games. Fifa have not recognized that that record am sure our girls supporters at that time remembers the record.

          • Njooka   December 13, 2012 at 11:34

what is wrong with now is that you will need to start searching for records which you’ll probably never find. then is messi the only one to be crowned? why did you not challenge gerd muller’s crowning?
