More than 70 students arrested, as PF considers closing Mulungushi university

More than 70 students of Mulungushi university have been arrested by police and charged with riotous behaviour after they protested the indiscriminate fees by the management.

The students comprising 53 male and 17 females were rounded up in an operation carried out this morning and are kept in different police cells awaiting to be arrayed before courts preferably on Saturday for the said charges.

Meanwhile university sources have told the watchdog that higher education minister Michael Kaingu today called the university vice chancellor Hellicy Ngambi and the two discussed the possibilities of closing the public university.

The source said that Kaingu wanted to brief Lungu on his plans and once Lungu gives him a go ahead then he will announce the closure.

The university increased the fees by nearly 50% and 200% for supplementary exams and in spute MU being a public university the students there do not get any money from the government bursaries like their colleagues at CBU and UNZA.
