7,000 Kabwe farmers protest non delivery of fertiliser

Over 7,000 farmers in Kabwe have been cut off from receiving fertiliser and other farming inputs due the failed e voucher system introduced by PF, some of the irate farmers yesterday staged a protest at the provincial cooperatives office.

The irate farmers complained that because of the failed fertiliser distribution project, their crops have weathered and fear there will be poor crop yield this season.

Central province minister Davies Chisopa confirmed that over 7,000 farmers in Kabwe alone have not yet been given the cards in spite of initially being on the Fertiliser input Support Programme (FISP) and having fully registered. The PF minister however did not give a clear explanation on when the cards will be activated.

Meanwhile, following the expose by the Zambian watchdog of hunger in Mkushi due to PF poor agriculture policies, 1,500 bags of relief maize have been delivered to the area for onward distribution.

Zambia Air Force sources disclosed to the Zambian watchdog that the relief maize will be air lifted to the area. This is contrary to President Edgar Lungu’s statement last year that no area will be affected by food shortages.
