An Accountant with the Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) Mpika branch has committed suicide by taking suspected rogo, which is a poisonous pesticide.
Both Mpika Police and ZNFU sources confirmed today and named the deceased as Kaela Chimbala.
Sources said the body of Kaela was discovered in her home on Wednesday morning.
Police suspect that Kaela might have killed herself following reports that she misappropriated money belonging to Small Scale Farmers (ZNFU) in Mpika.
Sources disclosed that over 50 farmers in the district had last year contributed undisclosed amount of money to ZNFU for purchase of farm inputs.
However, when the union failed to deliver the inputs, some farmers lodged a complaint to Police and Kaela was allegedly ordered to refund them money to enable them to buy farm inputs elsewhere.
Sources said an initial list presented to police had 21 names of the affected farmers with an estimated amount of money totaling to eleven million kwacha which the farmers union owes them.
According to farmers who had assembled at ZNFU offices in Mpika last Tuesday, some casual workers who were slashing the surrounding told them that the officer had locked herself in the office.
They said they could not knock on the door because they did not what she was doing in there.
One of the farmers who declined to be named said, as he sat outside the offices, he felt unpleasant smell like rogo and when he looked around, he saw an empty plastic container lying on the ground. He could not suspect anything because he was at the office which promotes farming and gardening.
He suspected that whilst in the office, the victim might have been contemplating to commit take the same chemical as she was under pressure with the farmers who had wanted their monies back.
