Akafumba, Malipenga ignore LAZ summons

akafumbaMinistry of Justice Permanent Secretary Joseph Akafumba and Lusaka based Lawyer Rabison Malipenga on Friday shunned the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) disciplinary meeting. A source from LAZ has disclosed that Akafumba and Malipenga were summoned to appear before the LAZ disciplinary committee that sat in Ndola to give their side of the story on allegations by Lusaka lawyer Nellie Mutti of Lukona Chambers. Mutti has lodged a complaint with LAZ against Akafumba and Malipenga for diverting money meant for former civil servants from Lukona Chambers to Malipenga’s law firm.
“We summoned Akafumba and Malipenga to appear before the LAZ disciplinary committee but they out-rightly shunned the meeting. So we could not go ahead to hear the matter” the source said.
The source said it was sad that senior government officials who are also senior lawyers can shun appearing before LAZ an establishment that regulates the conduct of lawyers in the country.
“It is very unfortunate that senior government officials can disobey LAZ. This is the second time such a thing is happening. If you remember properly even the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Mutembo Nchito refused to appear before LAZ.Now if senior government officials are the ones in the fore front disobeying what more ordinary lawyers” the source said.
Malipenga with the help of Akafumba has diverted millions of Kwacha meant for former civil servants to his firm where he is deducting 15 per cent that is shared among themselves including one criminal called Siachoke Simemeza.
