Al Jazeera reports the massive poverty in Western province

While ailing dictator Michael Sata is busy yapping about the unprecedented development in various parts of the country, there is growing discontent for the people of Western province who were promised a separate state.

Dozens of people have since been arrested from this part of Zambia, accused of treason for supporting the creation of a new state called Barotseland in the country’s Western Province.

Many people in the area are farmers whose lives seem remote from Lusaka’s complicated politics and history. Even today, some are too afraid to speak out against the federal government owing to fear of reprisals.

But many in the neglected area say they understand the desire for self-determination.

Al Jazeera’s Tania Page met one farmer willing to share his story.
