Analysis of the Mpongwe vote

Dear Editor,

I thought you might be interested my little bit of electoral analysis:

Main Parties share of Total Votes Counted

in Mpongwe Parliamentary Elections, 2001-2013

Party

2001

2006

2011

2013

MMD

50%

78%

54%

10%

UPND

22%

10%

33%

PF

1.4%

11%

35%

50%

The above table shows the trend of party shares of votes in Mpongwe parliamentary elections. It is clear that the MMD vote precipitously collapsed in the 2013 by-election, and the main beneficiaries are PF and UPND. We can also see that UPND has done better in picking up votes from MMD, since the UPND share of the vote rose by 23% as against 15% for the PF. Moreover, the UPND gain was from a small previous share of 10%, so proportionately the UPND more than trebled its vote by comparison with its performance only two years earlier.
