The Chairperson for Parliamentary Select Committee on Economic Affairs, Energy and Labour has asked the Zambian government to appoint an independent task force to help save the free falling Kwacha.
Mr. Kennedy Hamudulu who is also Siavonga Member of Parliament has told the Zambian Watchdog from Geneva Switzerland where he is attending a workshop that as chairperson of the select committee, he was worried that the Kwacha was losing value at a very alarming rate.
“As Chairman for Parliamentary Select Committee on Economic Affairs, Energy and Labour, I’m compelled to comment on the rapid loss of value of the Kwacha. We need an explanation from the Bank of Zambia through the Minister of Finance. Government should also appoint an independent task force to help save the Kwacha,” he said.
Mr. Hamudulu the United Party for National Development (UPND) MP further said a time frame should be given to both the Minister of Finance’s statement and the release of the report by the independent task force once formed.
He said the Select Committee would soon engage the office of the Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini to see how best the committee can get involved in resolving the problem.
The Kwacha has been losing value at a very fast rate. At Press time, the Kwacha was trading at K7.1 to US $1
