ON SEXISM [The Never-ending Case of Bigotry]: That Inonge Wina [Zambia’s new Republican Vice President] is being reduced to merely a woman makes a curious, sad and most unfortunate observation/development. Just like Guy Scott, first and foremost, Inonge Wina is a human being. Guy Scott was not appointed to the Republican Vice Presidency merely because he was a man. And curiously, there was no jubilation that a man had been appointed. Note that! Just like Inonge Wina, he had a skills-set and competences that made him suitable for that office. Now to witness people rejoice over her appointment merely because of her sex is sorry indeed. This is a form of bigotry/prejudice in our soci
ety, albeit subtle yet deep-rooted. It subtracts from the merit that she irrefutably possesses. Strangely but true, it is akin to rejoicing over an appointment of a Goa/Nsenga/Ushi merely because of his tribe. Let us emphasize her suitability to serve, her competence, and not merely her sex or else the case for the empowerment of the girl-child/women through role-modelling will be dealt a terrible negative blow. To advance the cause of human development we must learn to see things clearly lest our joy becomes a product of confusion, a function of wrong premises. Women are NOT inferior to men. They are different. Both matter. And the merit that each sex possesses is that vital resource which we must focus upon, harness and exploit for community wellbeing, for national development. Abash bigotry! Aluta continua!
