Armed bandits snatch over K250,000 from Kabwe businessman

Five armed bandits Monday morning staged a dramatic robbery and went away with K250,384 from BM Patel distributors located on Buntungwa avenue, less than a kilometer from Town centre police post, Central division police headquarters and Kabwe central police station.

According to sources, the bandits who were armed with an AK 47 rifle and axes entered the shop shortly after 08:00hrs just after the owner had opened for business and immediately ordered the few customers inside the shop to lie down and close doors shouting that there is no business today.

The owner Satish Patel was held at gun point and ordered to give them all the money in his possession. They commanded him to open the safe, which he did and then hauled all the money before speeding off in a white Toyota Spacio vehicle that was parked outside.

Central division Police commander Standwel Lungu who is rarely in Kabwe, confirmed the robbery to the media and said police had launched a manhunt. He also appealed to residents to help police with apprehending the armed robbers.

Recently Zambia police headquarters had to reverse the appointment of a well known criminal known as Chipalata as officer in charge of anti robbery. Currently Chipalata is masquerading as district criminal investigations officer (CIO) for Kabwe district and with him in that seat, this robbery is likely to be covered as he is known to be working with dangerous criminals with whom they share the proceeds.

Prior to a forced transfer to Kabwe, Chipalata was in Chipata where again people protested because of the increase in crime in the area. Dealing in used cars is one of his businesses and people have been wondering why he has continued to be kept in the police service.
