United Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema has written to Home Affairs Minister Mkondo Lungu calling for the arrest of MMD cadres who instigated the violence that marred the Chilanga constituency by elections nominations.
In a letter dated October 12, 2010, obtained by QFM, Mr Hichilema has singled out MMD Lusaka province chairperson William Banda as the one who has continued to justify his brutality and uses uncivilized ways of expressing himself. Mr. Hichilema says the violence was captured by various Media organizations and that it occurred in full view of Police officers who appear to be scared of restraining the MMD cadres. He says based on recent threats by MMD cadres on political and church leaders and the civil society, it is clear that law and order has broken down in the country. Mr. Hichilema says it is sad that Information minister Ronnie Shikapwasha and his Education counterpart Dora Siliya are quoted in the media to be in support of Mr. Banda and his negative elements. The UPND leader wonders why the culprits are left scot free and further calls on the government to introduce effective measures to restore law and order, peace, human rights and individual freedoms.
