The African Union (AU) has deployed a team of 30 election observers scheduled to arrive in Zambia on 17th September to monitor next week’s elections.
AU Commission chairperson Jean Ping said in Addis Ababa that that the election observation mission will be led by former OAU assistant secretary general Vijay Makhan.
Mr Ping says the AU mission, expected to be deployed across the nine provinces of the country includes personalities representing the AU member states, the AU commission, Pan African parliamentarians, officials of the national electoral bodies and members of the African civil society.
He says the Zambian government extended the invitation in accordance with the provisions of the 2002 Durban Declaration on the principles regulating democratic elections in Africa.
