Back to UNIP days, as black market for essential goods reappears in Zambia

IMG_3949As it was in the UNIP days under Kenneth Kaunda when essential goods were beyond the reach of ordinary citizens, some traders are cashing in on unstable mealie meal prices by buying in bulk and later resale at the slightest change of prices.

Some youths are displaying the commodity right outside the Shoprite stores, as captured by our photographer who was passing through Kabwe. It started with bread, now extended to mealie meal, sugar and cooking oil.

When interviewed, one elderly person had this to say..”This is a sign of a degenerated economy to which the visionless Edgar Lungu and his PF want to subject us to, these things were only in Kaunda days and we kicked out Kaunda for this. Indeed Finance minister Alexander Chikwanda was right when he warned of harder times ahead”.
