Barclays today announced the appointment of Bret Packard as the interim Managing Director of Barclays Bank Zambia plc (BBZ), subject to regulatory approval, after Zafar Masud has completed his two year term at the helm of the bank.
This is according to a media statement made available to the Watchdog by Webster Malido, Head of Corporate Affairs for BBZ.
Commenting on the appointment, Vinit Chandra, Barclays CEO for Emerging Markets – Global Retail Banking (GRB) said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank Zafar for the positive contribution he has made to the business in Zambia, and wish him all the best for the future. For the time being, and until a new Managing Director has been appointed, I am pleased to announce that, with immediate effect, Bret Packard will be acting as the interim Managing Director for Barclays Bank Zambia”.
“Zambia is a very important market for Barclays. We are proud of the fact that we have been operating here since 1918 and are the top bank in terms of market share. We remain highly committed to this country. Bret brings with him a wealth of experience in consumer banking acquired across a wide range of global markets including the UK, United States and Asia Pacific”, he added.
Bret has over 23 years financial experience in senior positions including deep international expertise in consumer banking acquired across a wide range of global markets. He joined GRB Emerging Markets Centre in Dubai in July 2009 as Head of Premier and Liabilities after nearly three years as Managing Director of Barclays Financial Planning and Premier Banking within the Barclays UK Retail Bank. Prior to joining Barclays, Bret held various senior positions with Citigroup for 19 years with overall responsibility for the Asia Pacific Region Consumer Investments business spanning 11 countries. Prior to that, he ran Citibank Japan’s Retail Branch Network and Consumer Investments Product organization after having overall sales responsibility for Asia Pacific’s mass affluent performance. Bret also held other senior roles within Citibank’s Consumer Banking operation in the Western United States.
Commenting on his appointment, Bret said: “Zambia is a country of strategic importance to Barclays. We have been providing best of class financial services in this country for nearly 100 years and plan to continue to do so for decades to come. I am looking forward to leading this great team of banking professionals until a permanent Managing Director has been appointed”.
Whilst congratulating and welcoming his successor, Zafar Masud said “I wish Bret every success in this role. The appointment of someone of Bret’s calibre to this role bears testimony to the importance that Barclays attaches to this country. I had the honour and privilege of leading this fantastic business for two years and I can now set to facing new career challenges knowing that the business is in the safest of hands”.
