Battle to succeed President Sata in PF deepens

The Presidential succession battle in the Patriotic Front has deepened with Sports Minister Chishimba Kambwili joining the race.

Kambwili eyeing top job

A number of prominent senior PF members have been campaigning within the party to take over from President Michael Sata.

According to a senior party official within the PF Central Committee, Chishimba Kambwili has also joined the race a move that has annoyed Defence Minister Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba who now suspects Kambwili has been leaking sensitive information to the private media.

Others who have been campaigning to replace Sata who still has four more years are GBM the Defence Minister, Given Lubinda the Foreign Affairs Minister, Winter Kabimba the party Secretary General and on the side lines Post Newspapers Managing Director Fred Mmembe. Winter’s strength is the party structure and the District Commissioners because he is the one who has been recommending their appointments.

GBM relies on his riches and the Bemba vote while Kambwili says he is very popular on the Copperbelt.

For Fred he wants to use his paper and the many senior government officials including the Director of Public Prosecution DPP, Mutembo Nchito.

Given Lubinda calls himself Mr. Clean in the PF corrupt government.

It is not clear why senior PF members are campaigning this early when Sata is only 9 months in office and still qualifies for 9 more years if he went for a second term.

The Post Newspaper, owned by Fred, has since been carrying editorials discouraging others from early campaigns.
