British govt, HH urge Zambian govt to declare hunger national disaster

The British Government has advised Zambia to declare the hunger situation a national disaster in order to attract more international support.
And United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema has called for immediate declaration of the hunger situation in the country as a national disaster in order to galvanize international support.
British High Commissioner to Zambia Fergus Cochrane Dyet says the hunger situation in some parts of the country is worrying and needs urgent mitigating measures to prevent loss of life.
Speaking when he met Vice President Inonge Wina at her office, Mr. Cochrane Dyet said the majority of people in the 109 affected districts need assistance.
He said his country through the Department of International Development -DFID- has been assisting Zambia for some time now and wants to continue doing so.
In response Vice President Inonge Wina stressed that the impact of drought in Zambia arising from effects of climate change has had a negative toll on agriculture production and food security.
The opposition UPND is on record having called on government to declare the food situation as a national disaster over three months ago but government has been rubbishing the calls insisting that the country had enough food and that no one will die of hunger

Hakainde Hichilema stressed that the hunger situation in the country due to drought and other factors is attaining unprecedented levels not witnessed in a long time in this region.
‘Government should not shy away from calling for international support to avert severe starvation that is taking a heavy toll on the population,’ Hichilema said in a statement.
He said the matter was non partisan and needs concerted efforts in order to mobilise resources to help starving citizens across the country adding that no one should play politics on such matters when citizens are starving to death.
Meanwhile Barotseland Prime Minister Mukela Manyando has said most parts of Barotseland are facing a serious hunger situation as a result of poor rains during the last farming season adding that there was urgent need of measures to avert the looming hunger.
He said hunger assessment reports from BRE structures across districts have indicated that the situation was serious and needed urgent measures to help the people.
