Canisius Banda calls for national unity, HH says party to petition by-elections

Opposition UPND president Hakainde Hichilema this morning unveiled former MMD Chairperson for Health, Dr. Canisius Banda, as the UPND Vice-president for politics.

Mr. Hichilema who also announced the inclusion of other members to the party’s National Management Committee (NMC) said it was time Zambians moved forward and got united behind the UPND as it prepares to assume leadership of the country in 2016.

He said everyday, the UPND is being vindicated because of the many lies that have not been fulfilled by the PF administration.

“God works in miracles, people wanted change and the PF capitalised on the levels of poverty in the country to cheat people that they would deliver national prosperity within 90 days. But now after two years of the PF administration, the nation is even going backwards,” he said.

Mr. Hichilema said PF Agriculture Minister Bob Sichinga yesterday admitted by confessing that the national maize yield in the country this year will be the lowest the country has harvested, something that is alien in Zambia.

“That’s what we mean when we say these people have no developmental agenda and plans for this country and it was time Zambians once more claimed their dignity by coming together such as my brother Dr. Canisius Banda and formed a government that cared for the people not their personal bellies,” he said.

Mr. Hichilema thanked the people of Lukulu West in Western province and the huge numbers in Kapiri Mposhi that voted for the UPND as part of the revolution that was unstoppable.

He maintained that the electoral process was still not fair despite the good performance by the UPND in the just ended by-elections in Livingstone, Mpongwe, Kapiri Mposhi and Lukulu West.

He said the PF tried once more to instigate violence but the UPND restrained their members from reiterating despite the amount of provocation.

“There was too much vote buying as you saw for yourselves even on the day of voting when our alert members caught a PF cadre distributing millions of Kwachas to voters in Kapiri Mposhi. So far we have petitioned the Livingstone and Mpongwe by-elections because we have strong evidence of intimidation, violence, vote-buying and other vices committed by the PF,” he said.

He indicated that the UPND would also petition the Kapiri Mposhi by-election because even the Electoral Commission of Zambia was aware that some ballot paper booklets went missing before voting day and today they have not been accounted for them.

And speaking when he joined the UPND, Dr. Banda said Zambia belonged to all Zambians and the UPND was currently the only party that presented a huge opportunity for the majority poor to redeem themselves.

Dr. Banda who congratulated Mr. Hichilema and the UPND for the good works they have been doing under difficult circumstances, said the PF’s ‘donchi kubeba’ slogan was evil to this country and should never be embraced.

“Zambia belongs to all of us and it was time we embraced national unity and reclaim the freedoms that we have lost as a country. People are being harassed everyday, we have lost freedom to assemble, people have no food, poor health and education services are all part of this administration,” he said.

Dr. Banda said those who were saying UPND was a tribal party were people with small minds that have no arguments to advance against the UPND other than pure jealous.

“It is time as country we once more submit ourselves to almighty God because there were too many divisions in the nation created by the PF administration. If UPND was a tribal party I would not have joined it because I don’t subscribe to such nonsense and tired debates of maligning other people of God. If people have nothing to say against others, the best they can do in the name of almighty God is to keep quiet than peddling lies like they have been doing on HH,” he said.

At the same function, former Western province Deputy Minister under the MMD Richard Mwapela joined the UPND saying Hakainde’s leadership qualities, the outspoken business achievements and qualifications, matched with the great UPND and national vision that the country needed.

“Indeed, the UPND manisfesto is the best for this country, no wonder most political parties try to copy it though they lack capacity and skills to implement it,” he said.

Mr. Mwapela asked the media to play its rightful role in society by covering the UPND fairly as no amount of biased coverage and tribal mudslinging would stop what he termed ‘the great revolution for real change that will have the UPND govern and develop the nation after 2016 elections and beyond’.

“Whether they like it or not, the political campus is pointing to you Mr. Hichilema as the ray of hope and next 6th president of Zambia. You are the Moses and Joshua of the bible who led the children of God victorious to the promised land, he said.

And the party announced the appointment of former PF Kankoyo MP Mr. Percy Chanda as Chairperson for Labour and Social Security, Ms. Elizabeth Lungu Deputy Chairperson- Community Development, Amb. Adrian Bauleni Chairman for Lands, Mr. Rapson Chilufya- Chairman Sports and Child Development, and Ms. Loveness Malambo as Deputy Treasurer General.

Others are Mr. Moono Mapani as Deputy Chairman Rural Construction, Edith Kamanga as Deputy Chairperson Women Affairs and Ms. Janet Nawa as Deputy Chairperson for Arts and Culture.
