Yesterday, 11 November 2015, a delegation of thirteen middle management and some deans led by the deputy vice-chancellor left for a seven day visit to Turkey to go and sign an MoU for an academic exchange programme, and sources say to also “learn how Universities are run there”. The trip is all paid for by the cash strapped institution. Most UNZA staff that are aware of the trip are appalled. “It is sad that the new UNZA management can sanction such unnecessary travel for so many officers”, a source said. The cost of a single ticket is said to be K11,000 to 14,000, plus allowances. Not long ago academic staff were on go slow demanding payment of outstanding benefits and dues. Such immoral expenditures should not be tolerated. Or perhaps, they are just following the precedence set by the president.
