Charcoal prices also go up

The price of charcoal in most parts of the country has gone up as a result of the recent increase in ZESCO electricity tariffs, a survey conducted by the Jesuit Center for Theological Reflection (JCTR) has revealed.
JCTR Programme Officer for Social and Economic Development, Bwalya Mutumba says that a lot of people especially in rural areas have resorted to using a lot charcoal after ZESCO hiked the tariffs which in turn has resulted in the hike for charcoal prices.

Ms Mutumba said very few people are affording to use electricity because it is expensive as compared to using charcoal.

She said according to the survey the center has done in all the towns where they are collecting data for the food basket, people are just buying limited electricity units and increased spending on charcoal for sustainability.
