Chiefs petition govt over land

Three Chiefs from Itezhi tezhi district in Southern Province have petitioned government on the encroachment of illegal settlers in the Namwala Game Management Area (GMA).

Presenting their petition to Tourism, Environment and Natural Resources Minster Catherine Namugala at her office in Lusaka today, group representative Chief Kaingu urged government to act quickly on the matter.

Chief Kaingu explained that settling of people in GMA is likely to retard government’s progress in safeguarding the country’s natural resources and the environment, hence the need for corroborated efforts in stopping the vice of illegal settlements.

And receiving the petition on behalf of the Minster, Environment and Natural Resources Deputy Minster Vera Chiluba-Tembo reiterated government’s commitment to addressing problems of illegal settlements in the country.

Ms. Tembo said government is concerned with increasing number of illegal encroachments especially in restricted areas such as game parks and forest areas.

She has assured the Chiefs that government will look into the matter seriously and find a lasting solution to the problem.
