A two month old baby in Chinsali District of Muchinga Province was temporary abandoned last night after her parents got into a domestic fight.
Amos Mulenga 26 and Rona Chisanga 31 both of Kabuta village in Chief Nkula`s area abandoned their two month old infant in a dispute after a drinking spree.
ZANIS reports that this came to light when remorseful Mulenga, who pretended not be the father of the baby, reported the matter to Chinsali police station yesterday.
Mulenga told the police that he had found a baby in the drainage along Lombe Private School whose mother he said he did not know.
He told the police that his wife Chisanga usually gives her baby sleeping pills called piriton, before she goes for beer drinking every night, and only returns home the following morning.
But Ms. Chisanga denied the allegations saying after her husband beat her, he went away with the baby and came back without the baby.
She explained that when she had questioned her husband of the where about of the baby he told her that he left the baby with one of the relatives.
But Paul Kasonga, a nurse working in Obstetric s and Gynecological ward at Chinsali District Hospital, told ZANIS that the baby was brought in around midnight by two Chinsali police officers and that the mother of the baby was not known by then.
And Chinsali District Commissioner (DC) Evelyn Kangwa who rushed to the hospital around 05:00hours expressed sadness over the incidence.
The District Commissioner complained bitterly on how some women are failing to give parental care to their babies and indulge themselves in beer drinking.
Ms. Kangwa said such behaviors affects the upbringing of children and cannot condoned in the society.
The government official also confirmed that Mulenga the baby`s father has been apprehended and is in Police custody for causing assault and giving false information to the police.
However the DC said both Mulenga and his wife should have been detained at Chinsali police station so that the couple draws a lesson from the incident.
