Chitambo violence: PF cadre in court for assault

Nevers Muchemwe 25, a Patriotic Front (PF) cadre who was arrested for allegedly assaulting an MMD supporter in Serenje’s Chitambo constituency, yesterday appeared in the magistrate court for plea.

Muchemwe of Kanyama compound in Lusaka appeared before magistrate Happy Chongo and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He is alleged to have assaulted Lloyd Kabango an MMD carder of Chalilo last Sunday and caused bodily harm.

The matter was adjourned to 27th July 2009, next week Monday for trial.

Muchemwe has applied for a bail which was granted at K2million.

Public prosecutor Israel Chikubayi did not object to the bail application saying the court could grant him as long as the sureties were based in Serenje.

PF party officials who included Serenje businessman Philip Kosamu paid for the bail for Muchemwe.

Morris Mwansa and Lloyd Kabango both of MMD were beaten on Sunday at Chalilo in Chitambo constituency were campaigns for the parliamentary by-elections are going on.

Four candidates who include MMD’s Solomon Musonda, FDD’s Evans Chola, UNIP’s Timothy Kapolo and Chanda Mutale for PF are vying for the seat.

Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) set august 13, 2009 for the by-elections in the area.

The seat fall vacant following the death of MMD MP Nasim Hamir .
