Choombe punched out as Zambia’s reps at Olympics disappoint

Oopps, Choombe takes one on the nose from Australia’s Jeffrey Horn

Zambian boxer Gilbert Choombe was Tuesday evening eliminated from the London 2012 Olympics after losing 19-5 to become the third envoy of the seven to fall out of the competition at preliminary stage.

Fighting in the blue corner as a 64kg light welterweight contender against 24-year-old Australian Jeffrey Horn, Choombe lost all three rounds on an overrall score of 19-5.

The Zambian scored only one point in the first round but succumbed to six before putting up a comeback display in the second round which only ended a near 4-2 score in favour of Horn.

Choombe, 20, was worn out in the third and final round as Horn rained serious punches to net nine points against the Zambian’s two. The final tally read beyond Choombe who alongside judoka Boas Munyonga and swimmer Zane Jordan have now been confined to the terraces.

Munyonga was disqualified from the race when he failed to adhere to technical understanding of his 81kg category against Japan’s Nakai Takahiro.

Swimmer Zane Jordan, based in the United Kingdom, finished third in his heat after 58.77 seconds which was better than his previous 59.33 seconds record he entered the event with but it was not enough to go passed the preliminary round.

Zambia’s seemingly faint hopes for medals now rests on women’s 100m sprinter Choosha Chaujze who will be on the tract at 11:40 while on Friday while Gerald Phiri will be on the track in the 100m men’s race on Saturday at 11:00hrs.

Middle distance runner Prince Mumba will be on track on August 6 in the 800m at 11:50 hours.

ati am a boxer. studying your opponent til the end of the last round suuuure?????? am convinced beyond reasonable doubt that chimbwi uja corrupted his way to the ring.adding 2 more rounds that chap would have been killed in the ring.lets be serious gentlemen lets not embarase ourselves like that. we dont even have a proper pool 4 our swimmers.

    Moko Moko.
I agree maybe Choombe trains barefoot and without head gear at his gym in lsk. He could not see his opponent and he was flat footed.
What a waste of space at the olympics.
I was so infuriated watching this guy fighting in our name.

NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH 5 years

STOP wasting taxpayer’s money.Put your house in order. You don’t prepare for Olympics 2 months before the start of the games.Sports has become advanced. We don’t even have a performance sports centre in Zambia and expect to beat the best. How do we expect medals when we can’t even win medals in the SADC games not mentioning the All African games.Be serious and stop wasting our time and resoursces.Send the boxers to Cuba for 6 months and our athletes to South Africa to prepare and not prepare them at home where they will be fed on Kapenta without saladi.

Can the minister of sports step in what is going at the national sports council contraction site.We need the auditors to move in over the old materials removed from the old building by the some officials at the center. This total theft by public servant

  • comment-avatar

The problem is that our national sports council has people like Mr Mwamba Kalenga. The man has over stayed at the council.Last time he was forced to step down by the then chairman Dr Sakala. He is just a big problem in sports in Zambia.Using the minister’s driver is how he gets information on what the ministry is planing or in his work plan.My advice to the minister is for people like Mwamba Kalenga to take a back roll.

UMU GUYS BALIMUPOMPONSHA, MY TEMPER WAS VERY HIGH WATCHING THIS LOOSER BEEN BEATEN LIKE THAT. ALL HE WAS DOING WAS RUNNING AROUND IN THE RING WHILE BEEN PUNCHED IN THE FACE, HE WAS NOT EVEN THROWING PUNCHES ALESOLAFYE.

HE ONLY TRIED IN THE LAST ROUND BUT IT WAS STILL LATE HE ALMOST THREW HIMSELF OUT OF THE RING WHEN HE TRIED TO PUNCH THE OLDER BOY WITH A VWAPA BUT HE MOVE AWAY THE WAS RESQUED BY THE ROPES (ALI IKOBANYA MUNTAMBO) OTHERWISE HE COULD HAVE GONE OUT OF THE RING.

I WAS VERY DISSAPOINTED WITH THE TYPE OF REPRESENTATIVES ZAMBIA SENT THERE, DID THEY CORRUPT THE SELECTING COMMITEE????

MUNYONGO NANKWE CHIPUBA SANA, MU ZAMBIA OUR EDUCATION SYLLABUS IS OUT OF DATE EVEN SPORTS RULES ARE OUT OF DATE, ITS A PROBLEM. HOW CAN YOU FORGET RULES IN A TOURNAMENT??? THE GUY GRABED HIS OPPONENT’S LEG WHEN THAT RULES WAS REMOVED FROM THE NEW RULES WHICH WERE AMANDED SOME FEW YEARS AGO & HE CLAIMED HE FORGOT THE RULE NOLONGER EXISTED, THATS WHY HE WAS DISQUALIFIED.

ITS A SHAME TO ZAMBIA FOR SUCH BACK WARD BUTTOCKS LIKE THINKING CHAPS AS COUNTRY REPRESENTATIVES!!!

All this unecessary negativity! Learn to be supportive and not to critisize all the time! At least the chap went there to represent the country despite that fact that he did not do well… point is he was there! With the lack of proper training and maybe not so good a coach may have made him lose. The insults, the degrading of the guy… is that really necessary or is it to talk because people have mouths? In European countries and North America, some gyms are open 24 hours a day and are committed to the highest standards of fitness. There is also proper diet requirements, self defense techniques etc. Those guys are also supported by their governments and even have special medical doctors, trained in that field. Does Zambia offer top-quality equipment and training facilities and provide excellent instructions and training? Please think before you start throwing insults and condeming they guy who is representing the country. Can you put yourselves in the same ring he was in!?!? And if the answer is no… can you explain why??

WE DO THINGS CASUALLY. ABAZ HAS BEEN FIGHTING AMONG ITS EXECUTIVE AND WE EXPECT SOME POSITIVE RESULTS. WE ARE NOT RIPE FOR SUCH HIGH PROFILE EVENTS. IN JUDO A LOCAL COACH WAS LEFT BEHIND IN PREFERENCE FROM A ROMANIAN AND I AM SURE THE LOCAL COACH WHO WAS UNFAIRLY LEFT BEHIND MUST BE SMILING UP TO ZPS HQ. WE ALWAYS THINK WE ARE THE BEST YET WE ARE THE WORST.SPORTS ADMINSTRATORS INCLUDING THE MINISTRY OF SPORTS AND YOUTH DEVELOPMENT SHOULD GO BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD. HOW DO YOU SEND MORE OFFICIALS THAN ATHELETEES.ITS CNP SYSTEM AT WORK.I MISS THE LIKES OF LATE KEITH ‘SPINKS’ BWALYA, KENNEDY KANYANTA , HASTINGS BWALYA, MATETE ETC.INSTEAD OF IMPROVING ON OUR PAST ACHIEVEMENT WE ARE SINKING DEEPER IN POOR PERFORMANCE.
