Citemene along Mpika road

By Erenest Mwape-Despite the Zambian government discouraging citemene system which is the cutting down of trees which leads to deforestation, the practice is still rampant among the Bemba speaking people in the Northern Province.

Most peasant farmers have attributed the continuous cutting down of trees in the province to high costs of fertilizer in the country.

According to some elderly people, in olden days peasant farmers never cut down trees along major roads.

However, most farmers are now practicing citemene wherever they find trees as evidenced by pictures above  taken along the Mpika/Kasama highway.
