Several protesters have taken to the streets in Zambia’s neighbour, the Democratic Republic of Congo where they are challenging dictator Kabila’s plan to overstay in power.
The protests which started yesterday were more prominent in the capital Kinshasa and Lubumbashi as well as major cities where the irate citizens set ablaze some government buildings and vehicles, and burnt tyres on the highways. Some deaths have been reported.
Kabila’s renewed mandate ends in December but he wants to avoid elections and thereby prolong his stay in office.
It is fashionable for some African leaders to disrespect their constitution and are mainly forced out of office either by protests or death.
