Conservationists to reject Chiawa hotel construction

A report in the Cape Times notes that a proposal to build a new hotel in the Chiawa Game Management Area on the Zambian side of the Zambezi River in a wilderness area has shocked conservationists, and has been slammed as ‘totally inappropriate’ for the area.

Protea Hotels wants to erect the building just upstream from the world-renowned Mana Pools National Park and World Heritage Site. Sources said of 15 traditional leaders in the Chiawa region, 12 signed a document opposing the building of the hotel while three abstained. Critics say the proposed hotel, which will be by far the biggest in the area, is likely to spoil plans to have World Heritage Status extended to the Zambian side of the Zambezi.
