Couple killed in witch-hunt

An 80-years old man of Kasongo in Ndola and his wife believed to be in her 70s have been burnt to death by angry residents on suspicion that the couple was practising witchcraft.

Copperbelt Commissioner of police Mary Tembo said in Ndola yesterday that the incident happened on Sunday around 20 hours at the couple’s house.

Ms Tembo named the deceased as Jungo Chisola and Matengo Sinkamu.

She said the irate residents suspected the couple of being responsible for the death of a man in a road traffic accident recently.

The two were severely beaten and logs were later piled on them before they were set ablaze.

“Mr Chisola’s body was burnt to near ashes while his wife’s abdomen was ripped open” Ms Tembo said.

She also said that Ms Sinkamu’s right arm was charred and also the suspect inflicted a deep cut on the right side of her head.

Two people have since been arrested in connection with the killing.
