Cry Freedom: HH, Mumbi in court for mention

mumbiUnited Party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema on Friday appeared for mention before magistrate Joshua Banda in a matter in which he is facing one count of publication of false news with intent to cause fear and alarm to the public.

This is in the ongoing suppression of the opposition and freesom of speech by dictator Michael Sata who has started the process of reversing Zambia to the UNIP era.

Mr Hichilema who did not appear in person but through his lawyers had his case adjourned to January 15, 2013 for trial.

Charges in court are that Mr Hichilema on June 11, 2012 in Lusaka did orally publish statements in which he said, among other things, that ”PF had signed an agreement for the militia in Sudan to train PF youths to prepare for trouble.
The allegations which were coooked by the Post newspaper to try and trap Hichilema.

Magistrate Banda granted Mr Hichilema a K30 million cash bail, with two working sureties based in Lusaka and further ordered that his passport be surrendered to the senior clerk of the court.

Meanwhile, Edward Mumbi, 56, also appeared for mention before senior principal magistrate Aridah Chuulu in a case in which he was facing three counts of being in possession of three motor vehicles valued at K250 million suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Particulars of the charge are that Mumbi, of House Number 396 A/8/11 of Lusaka’s Makeni between December 1, 2010 and November 30 this year had in his possession a Mercedes Benz, registration number ALC 6229, Nissan Navara, ABT 5323, and a Mitsubishi Pajero, ALC 6336, properties suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Magistrate Chuulu said she was still waiting for instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on how to proceed with the matter.
Mumbi is only being harrassed for refusing to hold a press conference and denouncde the UPND as tribal party. A statement was written for Mumbi and circulated to the media before he even saw it in readiness for publication. All he needed was to go to a press conference and read the statement but he refused hence his current woes.

Trial has since been set for January 28 2013
