DPP refuses to be part of HH treason ‘circus’

  • Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Lilian Shawa Siyuni has refused to be part of what she called ‘circus’ prosecution of UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema.

Prosecutors under Siyuni have disclosed that the DPP has refused even to append her signature on any documents relating to the treason charge saying she has a name to protect and won’t be used to settle political scores.

Siyuni has also told her confidants that she will not allow herself to be embarrassed by HH’s Vicious lawyers on a case that has no merit.

Many people have been wondering why the DPP is not personally prosecution such a high profile case when in the past, all treason cases have been handled by the DPD in person.

Apparently Siyuni does not agree that HH committed a treasonable offence and that is why there is no document where she has delegated her power in writing.

On 25 October 2016 when he swore her in, Edgar Lungu told the DPP that the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) must not be used to settle scores.

Lungu further said opportunistic members of the Patriotic Front (PF) and the executive must not use the office of the DPP to advance their own causes.

The head of PFadvised the new DPP that he expects the office of the DPP to be independent, impartial and serve its intended purpose.

Lungu observed with concern that the office was abused in the past, adding that he does not expect to witness the same thing under his leadership.

Lungu advised Ms Siyuni to be dedicated and focused as she carries out her duties.
