ECZ confirms DCs tried to impose lists of names for polling assistants

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has confirmed that some District Commissioners are imposing lists of names for recruitment as polling staff in the 20th January presidential elections.
ECZ Acting Director Chomba Chella confirmed in a statement Thursday and expressed disappointment at the conduct of District Commissioners who were imposing lists of names.
Chella has appealed to all District Commissioners and Returning Officers to be non-partisan and ensure they follow the electoral Act.
He warned that the Electoral Commission will not hesitate to drop any officers who will violate the law.
On 5th January 2015 the Zambian Watchdog had reported that the District Commissioner for Kapiri Mposhi Beatrice Nakazwe had tried to impose a list of PF cadres to be recruited as polling assistants.
The PF cadres locked the council offices in protest and threatened to beat senior council officers after realising that their names did not appear on the final list which was screened by Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) officers.
