ECZ deeply concerned with political violence, convenes stakeholders meeting

livingThe Electoral Commission of Zambia has called for a consultative forum all major political parties, Zambia police service, faith based organisations civil society and Human Rights Commission to a one day meeting to chart a way forward in addressing the violence and tension that has been experienced before, during, and after by-elections.

The ECZ says it is deeply concerned by the level of political intolerance and does not wish to see the good reputation Zambia earned after the 2011 general elections to be tarnished.

The meeting which will be attended by party presidents, Secretary Generals and Chairpersons of political parties has been called against the background of the rising levels of intolerance and violence between political parties during by-elections as evidence by the recent Mpongwe and Livingstone by-elections.

The meeting whose theme is “peaceful, Free and Fair Elections-The Way Forward” will be held on April 16, 2013 in Lusaka at Mulungushi Conference Centre starting at 09.00 hours and will be addressed by international bodies such as the African Union.
