ECZ will go ahead announcing dates for elections, Cheseke admits applying for adoption on PF

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) says it will go ahead and set the date for the five pending parliamentary by-elections in Solwezi Central, Kasenengwa, Mkushi North, Zambezi West and Vubwi.

And as disclosed by the Zambian Watchdog, former Mangango MMD MP Taudi Chiseke has finally confirmed that he applied to re-contest the seat on the ruling PF ticket but is not sure if he will be adopted.

The ECZ position is despite PF Secretary General Wynter Kabimba indicating that he has directed the party’s lawyers to enforce the Supreme Court judgment in the the High Court to bar former opposition Members of Parliament whose elections were nullified for engaging electoral malpractices from recontesting their seats.

ECZ Public Relations Manager, Cris Akufuna has told Qfm News in an interview that the Commission will proceed and set the date for the by-elections this week following the Supreme Court judgment.

Last week ECZ Chairperson Irene Mambilima indicated that the Commission would allow former MPs Lucky Mulusa, Victoria Kalima, Sydney Chisenga, Charles Kakoma and Eustarkio Kazonga to re-contest in the by-elections following the Supreme Court’s judgment.

The Zambian Watchdog indicated that PF had no credible candidate for Mangango and are further determined to by time and delay the elections by fielding the same candidate they hope the opposition and ECZ will reject.

Highly placed sources within the PF disclosed that the ruling party want to delay the Mangango by-election by lumping it together with contentious legal battles of barring former candidates from re-contesting their seats.
