Evelyn Mwanawasa has not withdrawn, Lundwe is working for PF – MMD

The MMD has dismissed as false reports that its candidate in the Kafulafuta parliamentary by-election Evelyn Mwanawasa has withdrawn from the race.

MMD Deputy National Secretary Chembe Nyangu in a letter dated 3rd July to Electoral Commission of Zambia Chairperson Justice Irene Mambilima obtained by QFM News explains that Ms Mwanawasa merely briefly stopped her campaigns trail because of high blood pressure for which she sought treatment and control at Ndola Central hospital.

Mr Nyangu says this was a normal exercise in response to the family, friends and colleagues in the MMD.

He has accused PF Mpongwe Member of Parliament Gabriel Namulambe, former Lands Minister Gladys Lundwe, former Luapula province Minister Jazzman Chikwakwa and others of being behind the spreading of the rumour.

And MMD Vice President Michael Kaingu has described as mere speculation reports that Ms Mwanawasa has withdrawn her candidacy.

Dr. Kaingu says he spoke to Ms Mwanawasa who is currently admitted to Ndola Central Hospital who did not mention to him that she had withdrawn.

Nyangu said it was strange that Lundwe had found it fit to be the bearer of such a measure and hurriedly deliver it to the press.

“Evelyn Mwanawasa has not withdrawn her candidature. That is just a PF strategy to disrupt our campaign. Why has that message been transmitted to the media when we the MMD are not aware of it? Why Gladys Lundwe? So we have not heard anything of a resignation,” Nyangu said.

“Lundwe is working with the PF to discredit our campaign.”
