Father Ignatius Mweebe will be buried today at Chilubula Mission 30km from Kasama.
This is according to the program released by Kasama Archdiocese, Vicar General Father Ives Bantungwa, at a special church service in memory of Father Mweebe held at St. Jones Cathedral and attended by thousands of followers, Northern Province Permanent Secretary, Emmanuel Mwamba and the church leadership and catholic priests from all over the province.
Government has also declared the funeral an official one and today will be observed as a day of national mourning.
Father Mweebe was the Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC), Secretary General the position he held for ten years from 1994-2004.
During his tenure he rendered a strong voice for constitutional and governance issues.
Father Mwebe died on Thursday 21st June in a road accident when his car collided with a Fuso Truck near Kasama.
He was coming from Lusaka.
He was born on 28th February 1950 in Luwingu District.
During his life he held various positions. He was until recently the Apostolic Administrator for Kasama Archdiocese. He also taught at Lubushi Minor Seminary. He also served as a priest in Chilubi, Mporokoso and Mbala.
Archibishop of Kasama Archdiocese, Ignatius Chama who is in Italy has had to travel for the funeral. Government is expected to be represented by Minister of Defence and Kasama Central Member of Parliament, Hon. Godfrey Bwalya Mwamba.
He will be interred at Chilubula Mission in a burial ground reserved for priests since the 1900s.
