The Forum for Women Educationists in Zambia (Faweza) is on the brink of collapsing.
FAWEZA is one of the most respected and focussed NGOs in Zambia.
But donors are now pulling out of FAWEZA leaving the movement with no choice but to close or trim its operations. Already, FAWEZA has terminated contracts of all workers in Lusaka except for those of a few senior staff.
On November 30, 2013, National Coordinator, Agness Shipanuka wrote to staff at the secretariat and chapters across the country notifying them that their contracts would come to an end December 31, 2013.
FAWEZA told its workers who will start the New Year without employment that the main donors DANIDA, EKN have pulled out without saying why donors have deserted the movement after so many years.
Some workers told the Watchdog that there has been a history of financial mismanagement leading to donors departing.
FAWEZA, who could not even afford to pay its former workers gratuity, admitted that it has tried to write project proposals to other donors but without any success.
Forum for Women Educationists (FAWE) is a pan-African Non-Governmental Organisation working in 32 African countries to empower girls and women through gender-responsive education. The Zambian Chapter is Called FAWEZA.
FAWEZA’s aim has been ‘to increase girls’ and women’s enrolment, retention, progression, qualitative performance and completion at all levels in education.’
