Tanzania Zambia Railway Authority – TAZARA workers have finally downed tools and left passengers stranded after a meeting with the Zambian government failed to reach an agreement, the workers have complained of being angered by transport and communications permanent secretary Misheck Lungu and Kapiri Mposhi district commissioner Peter Mwiinde.
Last week, the workers demanded to be addressed by senior government officials to press for an increased salary and implementation of the salary payment in US dollar rate which has remained at K4.70 as it was when it was initially signed in 2009.
The downing of tools by the workers left passengers who were to board the train at Kapiri Mposhi stranded and they have vowed not to resume work until their grievances are resolved. During the meeting with Lungu and Mwiinde, the duo challenged the workers to show cause why their salaries must be increased, words which angered the workers.
The irate workers told the Watchdog that management has been failing to implement their demands saying that they can only do that with the consent of the board. Lungu is also the board chairperson of the Tanzania and Zambia jointly owned railway company.
