First beneficiaries of parole to be released Wednesday

Government is set to release 23 prisoners on parole from Lusaka region.

The group of 23 prisoners, to be released this Wednesday, is the first to be released on parole following the National Parole Board’s recommendation and subsequent approval by the Commissioner of Prisons.

This is in line with the Parole Rules in pursuant to the Statutory Instrument number 101 of 2008 and in the Prisons Act Cap 97 of the Laws of Zambia.

Zambia Prisons Service Public Relations Officer, Daniel Chiwela, confirmed the development in a statement.

“This will be the group of inmates to be released on parole following the National Parole Board’s recommendation and subsequent approval by the Commissioner of prisons as provided for in the Parole Rules in pursuant to the Statutory Instrument no. 101 of 2008 and in Prisons Act 97 OF Cap 97 of the Laws of Zambia,” read the statement.

The National Parole Board in appointed by the minister of home affairs as provided for in the Prisons Act Cap 97 and Act number 16 of 2004.

The prisons to be released on parole will have to serve the remainder of their sentence outside prison.

Meanwhile, ZANIS reports that two dangerous criminals armed with an AK47 Rifle have escaped from Solwezi state prison.

The criminals also ran away with Six rounds of ammunitions.

Two other suspected criminals are nursing serious injuries sustained after being shot at as they atempted to escape.

Northwestern Province Police Commanding Officer, Fabian Katiba, confirmed to ZANIS in Solwezi that the two suspects escaped as they were being taken back to the remand prison after attending a court session.

He said the suspected criminals are appearing in the High Court on charges of aggravated robbery.

Mr. Katiba said the suspects, who were handcuffed, managed to free themselves and grabbed the fire arms from the Police officers assigned to accompany them.

He said one of the Police officers was over powered by the suspects who grabbed the fire arm and fired three warning shots in the air to scare away any one whilst running away along side with three others.

The Police Chief explained that the other Police Officer could not be defeated by the other two criminals hence managed to shoot at them injuring two of them seriously and capturing the third one.

Mr. Katiba said Police have launched a manhunt and have appealed to the public to help arrest the dangerous criminals.
