Five people shot dead in Kabwe by convicts released by Sata

Five people have died while a sixth one sustained injuries after being shot at by armed criminals along the Kabwe Kapiri road. Police insiders say the killers are among the hundreds of convicts president Michael Sata has been giving freedom from the time he became president.

Meanwhile, Police officers on the Copperbelt have gunned down four dangerous criminals who  attempted to stage a robbery in Ndola’s chifubu Township.

Copperbelt Police Commissioner Mary Tembo says the four are suspected ex convicts who were recently released from jail.

In the Kabwe incident, the six included the driver, lorry boy and four other passengers who were travelling on a truck Reg. No ALF 2406 which they hired to transport iron sheets and mattresses from Lusaka to Kasama.

According to police deputy public relations officer Charity Munganga, when the truck reached an area between Manyumbi and Green leaf, the driver was ordered to park by criminals armed with one AK 47 riffle and three pistols who were using an unregistered Toyota corolla.

She said the criminals then ordered the passengers from the truck into their corolla and drove onto a gravel road, off the main road.

‘They later walked into the bush where the six were shot at in the heads.  Fortunately, the driver of the truck gained consciousness after sometime and walked back to the main road where he was given a lift to Kabwe town.

‘The criminals then drove away with the truck. Investigations into the matter have commenced and the scene visited. The truck has not yet been recovered’, said Munganga.

She said the bodies of the deceased are lying in Kabwe general hospital awaiting post mortem while the driver of the truck is admitted in the same hospital.

She said the incident happened on 22 November 2012 around 22:00 hours. Apart from the lorry boy, the other bodies have not been identified.

Meanwhile, Police officers on the Copperbelt have gunned down four dangerous criminals who last evening attempted to stage a robbery in Ndola’s chifubu Township.

Copperbelt Police Commissioner Mary Tembo says the four are suspected ex convicts who were recently released from jail.

Ms. Tembo says three of the criminals whose bodies are lying in the Ndola General Hospital are Zambians while, one is believed to be a Congolese National.

The Copperbelt police chief said the four were killed at around 21 hours last night and were using a Toyota sprinter registration number ACJ 8148.

She added that two other suspected criminals who were also part of the criminals who exchanged fire with police are on the run.

Ms. Tembo says the dead bandits have being terrorizing residents mostly in Ndola and Mufulira Districts for a long time now

She has commended her officers for the job well down and has asked residents to report all suspicious looking characters to police.
