Former minister arrested for celebrating Sata’s death

Police in Mbala have arrested Gaston Sichilima for allegedly celebrating the death of President Michael Sata. Schilima is said to have fired firing gunshots in the air following the announcement of President Michael Sata’s death. But Sichilima says he was just scaring owls away.

The 54 year old former Home Affairs Deputy Minister Gaston Sichilima of Mwenzo Farm fired the shots at Water Front Lodge in Mbala.

Northern Province Police Commissioner Charity Katanga who confirmed the development to ZANIS in Kasama today revealed that the incident happened yesterday at 21:30 hours.

Ms Katanga said that Mr Sichilima was asked to avail himself to Mbala police station where a warn and caution statement was recorded from him.

She said Mr. Sichilima who arrived at 10:00hrs hours today has since been arrested and charged for conduct likely to cause the breach of peace.

She added that Sichilima told police during questioning that he was firing the shots in the air to scare away some owls.

Ms. Katanga has also cautioned the general public to uphold good conduct as the country mourns President Sata.

She said police will not hesitate to enforce the law against those abrogating the dictate of a period of national mourning.
