About 32,000 Zambian farmers have been given land in the former Ukwime refugee camp in Eastern Province.
Eastern Province Permanent Secretary, Eularia Siamujaye said the majority of the beneficiaries are retirees who want to go into farming.
Ms. Siamujaye disclosed this when Science, Technology and Vocation Training Permanent Secretary, Sherry Thole called on her at her office in Chipata this week.
She said government has decided to open up the land for agriculture activities after it had remained idle for years since the repatriation of refugees to their countries of origin.
She said the place has proper social amenities like a clinic, proper water supply, a trades school and some housing units.
The PS said it was worrying to see such beautiful infrastructure like a training school going to waste instead of assisting people to acquire life skills.
And Science and Technology PS Sherry Thole has called for the recapitalization of the training school so that it could be of assistance to communities around it and others.
She said the institution is underutilized and the infrastructure is being en damaged noting that recapitalizing it will be in the interest of the nation.
