Post newspaper editor Fred M’membe Friday opened his defense in the case where he and his newspaper are facing contempt of court proceedings.
Magistrate David Simusamba on November 18, 2009 found M’membe and the Post newspaper with a case to answer.
The contempt proceedings arose from an article entitled ‘The Chansa Kabwela case: a comedy of errors’,that appeared in The Post edition of August 27, 2009 and which the state felt touched on the case of the People versus Chansa Kabwela.
Earlier chief resident magistrate Charles Kafunda had given a directive restraining media houses covering the Kabwela case from publishing any comments touching on the case.
In his defense today, M’membe said that at the time the article was published, he was on leave.
He told the court that he was pursuing a masters degree in Economics at the University of Zambia.
He said this was a full time course and all students were asked to take leave of work.
