FREE State Stars’ big spending spree continued yesterday with the acquisition of former Zambian international Noah Chivuta.
“We have signed Noah on a one-year contract with an option to renew it,” said an elated Rantsi Mokoena, Stars’ general manager.
This ends speculation that Chivuta, who has also played for SuperSport United, Bidvest Wits and Maritzburg United, was heading for Cape Town to join Santos.
“Noah is an experienced campaigner with massive international experience after playing for Chipolopolo (the Zambian senior national team) and we believe he will help us challenge for some silverware and the league title this season,” Mokoena said.
Chivuta impressed Ea Lla Koto’s technical staff when he featured for the team in their 1-0 win over Bloemfontein Celtic in a friendly on Saturday.
He is expected to travel with Stars to Botshabelo Stadium for their Absa Premiership match against newcomers Vasco Da Gama.
Stars coach Sunday Chidzambga said: “I am very pleased and happy to be working with a player of Noah’s calibre.”
Chivuta said: “I am happy to have joined a club like Free State Stars, which has a long history in South African football and has produced a number of good players.”
Stars chairperson Mike Mokoena said the new-look team’s mandate is to challenge for the championship title.
“We have spent a lot of money roping in quality players and it shows that we mean to win something this season.”
