GBM threatens to beat Community radio journalists

Kasama Central Member of Parliament Geoffrey Mwamba last week allegedly threatened physical violence against journalists at Radio Mano community station in Kasama , Northern Province .

This has annoyed Northern Province Minister John Chinyanta who has said it is wrong for Mr. Mwamba to harass journalists who were doing their job their jobs.

Mr. Chinyanta said if the Patriotic Front MP had any complaints against the operations of Radio Mano, he must follow the right channel in airing his grievances instead of him issuing violent threats to staff at the institution.

Last week, Mr. Mwamba allegedly stormed Radio Mano community station and threatened to beat up some journalists whom he accused of reporting negatively against him.

Mr. Chinyanta has since urged management and staff at Radio Mano to ensure that they discharged their duties professionally at all times.

Mr. Chinyanta observed that journalists played a critical role in information dissemination and as such, people should support the work of the media in the country.

He warned that no one including Mr. Mwamba had powers to shut down a radio station in the country apart from the Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services.

Mr. Chinyanta has since advised Mr. Mwamba to desist from promoting acts of violence against journalists but instead encourage them to be professional in their work.

The Minister further urged Kasama residents not to allow their area MP to bulldoze things but correct him where he goes wrong.
