Government desperately employing retired nurses

In a bid to mitigate the impact caused by the indiscriminate dismissal of about 300 nurses who went on strike to demand for better wages and conditions of service, government is now looking for retired nurses after failing to keep student nurses permanently at hospitals.
Ministry of Health Spokesperson Dr. Kamoto Mbewe announced the recruitment exercise in Lusaka and has appealed to all those who are offered letters to report to various stations immediately.
Government’s decision has left major health institutions paralysed as patients are being turned away while those critically ill are left to attend to themselves. Government is particularly worried about the possible outbreak of waterborne diseases like cholera following the recent rains.
However nurses in other hospitals in some parts of the country have threatened to go on strike if their colleagues are not reinstated
