Government introduces provincial color code for public service vehicles

Government has introduced different color codes for public service vehicles for each province.

Transport, Communication, Works and Supply Minister Yamfwa Mukanga has since disclosed that the Road Traffic Public Service Vehicles Regulations of 2013 has been approved and enacted as Statutory Instrument No. 39 of 2013 Road Traffic Act No. 11 of 2002.

Mr Mukanga told a media briefing in Lusaka (Thursday) that the Ministry has received submissions from stakeholders to consider having unique color code for each province.

He says the new regulation is aimed at addressing the concern of pirate taxis or vehicles that are being used for the conveyance of passengers on hire without being licensed.

Mr Mukanga says Central Province will have Yellow as its color code, Copper for the Copperbelt, Emerald Green for Eastern, Sky Blue for Luapula, orange for Lusaka, Silver for North Western, Wispy / Lime Green for Muchinga, Southern Province Purple-Amethyst, light Brown for western province and red for Northern Province.

The Minister has since called on Public Service Vehicle Operators to comply with the new Law in a bid to contribute towards attaining an effective road transport system.

Meanwhile Mr Mukanga has expressed concern over the lives that are being lost due to negligence by drivers.

He has since instructed the Road Transport and Safety Agency to ensure that it removes vehicles that are not road worthy to avoid unnecessary accidents.
