Government claims its s not aware that about 80 black Lechwes have gone missing in the Bangweulu wetlands.
This comes barely a month after Tourism and Arts Minister Ronald Chitotela banned the movement of animals from national parks to private game ranches.
According to conservationist working in the northern circuit, Nsama Learns, about 80 black Lechwes have gone missing in the Bangweulu wetlands in Luapula province and has demanded that the animals be returned.
But Ministry of Tourism Permanent Secretary Amos Malupenga has told Phoenix News that the Ministry has no Information on the missing animals.
According to the United Nations Development Programme –UNDP-, Bangweulu wetlands is the only place in Africa where the black Lechwes still occurs in significant numbers with the population estimated at 35, 000 in 2005.
