Govt claims 700 People’ Draw Govt Salaries Inappropriately

Over 700 civil servants in the Copperbelt Province have been found to be inappropriately drawing government salaries amounting to over K54million per annum.
Deputy Secretary to Cabinet Martine Mtonga says the 779 civil servants are classified as being unknown, resigned, deceased, dismissed, retired and deserters.
Dr. Mtonga says government has since suspended all payroll inputs for this month.
He has also revealed that government has blocked all salaries amounting to K312 million per annum for the 300,969 employees who were not accounted for during the head count and verification exercise in the Copperbelt Province.
Dr. Mtonga says government is likely to save 39 million kwacha per annum from withholding the salaries and wages of 5 hundred and 48 employees who remained unknown during the exercise.
He said this during a media briefing in Lusaka today.
And Dr. Mtonga said the Ministry of Education had the highest number of 3 thousand 7 hundred and 1 misplaced officers followed by Ministry of Health which has 2,311 drawing salaries amounting to over K29 million and over K17 million.
Dr. Mtonga, who is also smart Zambia national coordinator, said over 430 employees illegally accessed rural hardship allowances amounting to over K5million.
He also revealed that government has revoked log in credentials for all payroll end users countrywide.
Dr. Mtonga said those found to have breached government regulations in the process of payroll management at various levels will be handed over to law enforcement agencies for prosecution.
He however said government will this month appoint new payroll end users and will subject them to process of vetting and training.
