President Rupiah Banda says Government will divide Isoka district in Northern province into two, to create a new district called Mafinga.
Mr Banda said Thendere sub-boma will be combined with Muyombe to create Mafinga district.
“We have received several petitions from traditional leaders, members of Parliament and you the people of Isoka on the need to divide the district because it’s too big. As Government, we have listened to your petitions and we will create Mafinga district, combining Thendere sub-boma and Muyombe,” Mr Banda said.
The President was speaking in Isoka February 11.
Mr Banda said the creation of a new district will bring social services closer to the people.
“I direct the Minister of Local Government and Housing (Brian Chituwo) to speed up the process of creating a new Mafinga district so that we can start planning for services required in a district,” Mr Banda said.
The President said once Mafinga district is created, a district hospital, schools and other services required will be closer to the people.
He said Government will facilitate services in Mafinga district.
And speaking earlier, Isoka MMD member of Parliament Catherine Namugala commended President Banda for listening to the people’s concerns on dividing Isoka district into two.
Ms Namugala said the lives of women who were covering long distances to health centres in Muyombe and surrounding areas will be saved following the creation of a new district.
“Government’s decision is a good one and the people of Muyombe are extremely happy,” Ms Namugala said.
The people who attended the commissioning of the road project jubilated when President Banda announced the creation of Mafinga district.
Traditional leaders could not resist joining their subjects in a dancie to celebrate the formation of a new district.
