Please allow me space in your media outlet to express my personal views with regards to the irrigation scheme whose works are being carried out by Savenda Management Services in the Lusitu area, south of Chirundu District.
I have just returned from Lusitu and, based on what I saw on the ground, I wish to state that the works are of high quality.
All those who have been to Lusitu in the Gwembe Valley will agree with me that the lives of the good people of this place have been the very embodiment of misery. It has been drought, year after year as if the mighty Zambezi River does not pass literally in their backyard.
Now the coming of the Lusitu irrigation Scheme will change the story of misery to that of abundant success in terms of food security.
Allow me, therefore, to thank the World Bank for funding this project. From what I have always known about the World Bank, they don’t release money for a project until they are convinced it will work out.
From my interactions with the many villagers of Lusitu, the irrigation scheme is a great relief to them as it will bring to an end the desperation that the people of Lusitu have experienced since their forced removal from the fertile banks of the Zambezi River.
And talking about Savenda Management Services, the company carrying out the works on the irrigation scheme, I must say the works done so far have impressed me.
It `is my hope that after all has been done, it will be the Zambian people in general to benefit from the Lusitu Irrigation Scheme. .
