UPND president Hakainde Hichilema says the referundum is the best way of adopting the republican constitution, but Justice minister Edgar Lungu says Mr. hichilema’s demands are illegal.
Shortly after assuming power, ailing President Michael Sata assured the nation of a people driven constitution within 90 days, and speaking during a press briefing at the party secretariat, Hichilema charged that Zambians were tired of PF excuses on the constitution making process and urged his MPs to push for the bill and enure a legal framework in the constitution making process to allow for the bill of rights which will also protect journalists.
But in response to Hichilema’s demands, Edgar lungu said it was illegal for Hichilema to demand for the referundum. Lungu is a lawyer whose license was revoked for stealing clients’ money but through state interference, got it back late last month. Lungu has also failed to state when the draft constitution will be released to the public.
And speaking during the same occasion, the UPND leader said his party was in the position of preparing and presenting the party’s year 1 budget to illustrate how UPND will run the country’s economy. He stated that unlike the PF who got into power with no single plan on how to run the country, his party was geared and had already established how to generate resources. He said this in response to a journalist who wanted to know whether UPND will once again prepare an alternative budget to the one Finance minister Alexander Chikwanda will present to National Assembly tomorrow.
And over 30 PF members from Town centre and Mazyopa compound defcted to the UPND, citing poor leadership and lies in the PF. The defectors told Mr. hichilema that more of their colleagues were willing to defct to UPND and that PF was dying.
